If you're familiar with military time, you know that it's a way of measuring the amount of time during the day based on a 24-hour clock. In contrast to the traditional 12-hour format, military time divides every hour of the day into 1400 parts.
Using this system, hours are shown as four digits starting with 000 hours (also known as midnight) and ending with 2300 hours (midnight). For example, 11:00 AM would be written as 1100 hours while 6:00PM would be written as 1800 hours. While the traditional 12-hour format has AM and PM abbreviations, military time relies solely on the four digits to denote time.
To make things easier to understand, there are a few concepts you should keep in mind when it comes to reading military time. The first is that all times ending in 00 denote a full hour. For instance, 1700 hours would mean 5:00PM,1530 hours would mean 3:30PM etc.
The second concept is that any time after noon will always end in either 1300 or 1400 (ex: 1300 for 1:00 PM and 1400 for 2:00 PM). Lastly, anytime between 0000 and 0800 will always be designated as night or evening; any time from 0900 to 1700 is considered morning or afternoon; and any time from 1800 to 2359 is considered evening.
